Measles Exposure Alert: Child With Virus Visited Busy Locations Near PA/NJ Line, Officials Say

A highly contagious case of measles has been confirmed in an unvaccinated child who visited multiple high-traffic locations in Pennsylvania, sparking an urgent public health alert, officials announced on Sunday, March 2.

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Public Health (OPH) is tracking potential exposures and urging people to check their immunization records after the infected child was in several public places while contagious.

The child may have exposed others to measles at the following locations:

  • China Airlines Airport Shuttle Bus (Departing JFK Airport Terminal 4, arriving in North Philadelphia, Pho Ha Saigon, 757 Adams Avenue) from Feb. 25 at 9:30 p.m. to Feb. 26 at 3:15 a.m.
  • True North Pediatrics Associates of Plymouth (3031 Walton Rd., #C101, Plymouth Meeting) from Feb. 26, 11:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
  • CHOP King of Prussia Campus Emergency Department (550 S. Goddard Boulevard, King of Prussia) from Feb. 26, 12:52 p.m. to 3:02 p.m.

Measles spreads through coughing, sneezing, or contact with contaminated surfaces and can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, and a telltale rash spreading from the face downward.

What To Do If You May Have Been Exposed:

  • Check your immunization records: The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective at preventing infection.
  • Monitor for symptoms: Fever, rash, cough, or conjunctivitis can appear 7 to 21 days after exposure.
  • Contact a healthcare provider immediately if symptoms develop and call ahead before visiting a medical facility to prevent further spread.

Those at higher risk for severe complications include infants, individuals with weakened immune systems, and those who have not received the MMR vaccine.

Measles is a reportable disease in Pennsylvania, and healthcare providers must immediately notify OPH of suspected cases at 610-278-5117 or after hours at 610-635-4300.
